Area Company Purchases British Firm

Gelman Instrument Co. has purchased 100-year-old Hawksley Limited of Lancing, Sussex, England for an undisclosed price, according to Charles Gelman, president.

Sales of this firm was $600,000 for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1968, with after-tax earnings amounting to $60,000.

The British company manufactures a line of blood measuring equipment and hospital apparatus which are closely related to those manufactured by Gelman.

The acquisition of Hawksley Ltd. will be a part of a new Gelman-United Kingdom Ltd., according to Gelman Co. officials. This new company will market and manufacture scientific instruments in the United Kingdom and should lead to “substantial increases for sales of Gelman products manufactured in the United States,” officials said. Conversely, Hawksley products will be hold here.

Currently Gelman is negotiating for the purchase of other scientific companies, although no written agreements have, been reached.

Adds Product

Julius Richman, vice president and corporate director of marketing at Gelman Instrument Co. inspects a product he will soon be selling. The blood centrifuge is a major product of Hawksley, Ltd., a British company which Gelman recently purchased.
