Barton To Open Swimming Pool With Exhibition

Barton Hills Country Club members will celebrate the opening of their swimming pool this week-end with a dinner dance Saturday night and a family dinner and exhibition program Sunday.

Saturday night's "dedication” dinner dance will feature a diving exhibition at 10 p.m. by Alex Canja, who three times was named to the All-American swimming team for high and low board diving and served twice as captain of the Michigan swimming team. Canja will be director of the Barton pool.

Exhibition Scheduled

On Sunday an exhibition program by Olympic and All-American swimmers and divers will begin at 4 p.m., following the finals of the women's city golf tournament. A family dinner will be served from 1 to 7 p.m. and “Coney Island" refreshments will be served on the porch for children during the afternoon.

Wally Ris of the University of Iowa, Olympic 100 meter champion, former Big Ten, Intercollegiate and AAU 100-yard freestyle champion, and an All-American, will be one of the star performers in the exhibition.

Also on the program is All-American Bob Sohl, Olympic team member and third place winner in the breaststroke event, former Big Ten breaststroke champion and captain of the Michigan swimming team.

Big Ten Champion

All-American Dick Weinberg, former Big Ten and intercollegiate 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle champion and former captain of the Michigan swimming team, will be another of the performers. Charlie Moss, All-American and Big Ten individual medley champion and record holder, also is on the program.

Wally Stewart, former All-American distance freestyle swimmer and former captain of the Michigan swimming team; Dave Neish, All-American and captain-elect of the Michigan swimming team; Gus Stager All-American distance swimmer; Jim Hartman, All-American low board diving champion; and Alex Canja are others who will be performing.

A relay race, diving exhibition, and clown diving, are included on the program.

The swimming pool will be open for use by members sometime next week.
