U-M’s Plan To Abandon Zoo Unchanged
The, University has not changed its plans to abandon its small zoo, S. S. Sproull, city parks superintendent, told the City Council last night.
He made his comment as the council briefly discussed the zoo question.
Next Monday, the council will hear a report on the question by City Administrator Guy C. Larcom, jr., and also will take up the ballot proposal of First Ward Councilwoman Mrs. Eunice L. Burns.
The University plans to abandon its small zoo at the end of this month. Council discussions of the matter have raised the question of whether the city should take the animals and develop a small children’s zoo of its own. Mrs. Burns has said she will propose that the public vote Nov. 6 on a “small tax increase” to develop a city zoo.
Sproull also reported that it would cost the city $65,000 to $75,000 to develop a children’s zoo. Annual operating cost would be about $10,000, he estimated.
