Mile Relay Team Wins At Chicago
Michigan's mile-relay team gained possession of the Knox trophy at the Chicago Stadium relays Saturday night, having the best time of 11 teams that ran the relay in a series of four matched races.
The Wolverine quartet composed of Jim Pierce, Willis Glas, Fred Negus and Bob Ufer turned in the best time of 3:26.2 in beating out Illinois.
Bob Ufer, Michigan's sensational quarter-miler, was nipped at the tape by Jimmy Herbert of the Grand Street Boys club of New York City in the 600-yard race. Ufer had beaten Herbert twice this season—at New York and Boston. Herbert’s winning time was 1:12. Ufer recently won the National AAU title in 1:11.3 at Madison Square Garden.
Bob Hume of Michigan ran third in the Banker's mile in which Gil Dodds set a new indoor mark of 4:06.4. Bill Hulse was second. Hume's time of 4:14.9 was the best he has ever recorded.
Ross Hume was third to Les Eisenhart of Columbus, O., and Alfred Dailey of the New York Athletic club in the special 1,000-yard dash.
Elmer Swanson in the hurdles and Julian Witherspoon in the sprint were Wolverines who failed to place.
Michigan will enter a full squad in the Purdue relays this week at Lafayette, Ind.
