Bob Ufer Sets New Half Mile Mark Of 1:53.9
Bob Ufer, Michigan's sensational middle distance runner, broke the field house record and won a special half-mile race Saturday in the excellent time of 1:53.9. The old mark of 1:55.1 was made by Abe Rosencrantz of Michigan Normal in 1935.
In winning Saturday Ufer beat Capt. Dave Matthews by about five yards while John Roxborough was third, Bill Wheatley was fourth and Hal Carpenter of the Normal was fifth. Matthews also was clocked under the former record in 1:54.6 while Roxborough tied the previous mark.
Ufer’s performance was the fastest half mile ever run by a Michigan man.
