HEALTHY BOY

Cheers for the Hergenroeders

It was an unusually long wait for Richard and Donna Hergenroeder - 11 years, to be exact - but the baby of their dreams arrived on Tuesday morning: healthy, curly black hair, 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

The safe delivery of David Mesropian Hergenroeder at University of Michigan Hospitals was the best news in Wednesday’s paper.

On Sunday, News Reporter Karl Bates told about the incredible hurdles that the Hergenroeders had to overcome in their efforts to become parents. Donna Hergenroeder had endured the loss of six pregnancies, including two sets of twins, because her cervix wasn’t strong enough.

When Donna Hergenroeder discovered she was pregnant this time, doctors bolstered her chances with a special suture that held the uterus closed, and she was confined to bed for six months.

“I can understand the joy of being pregnant and having maternity clothes, but only in an abstract way,” she said Sunday before the scheduled cesarean delivery. She chose not to think ahead - about names or life with a newborn. The Hergenroeders had been disappointed too many times.

On Tuesday, though, there were only tears of joy.

David Mesropian Hergenroeder, said his dad, is “the best looking baby they’ve ever had at this hospital.

Such a happy ending is what we had in mind.
