FROM LOCAL REPORTS

Top senior athletes from the University of Michigan were honored this week at the 50th annual ,Bob Ufer Quarterback Club Banquet.

Selected as Michigan’s leaders and best were:

■ Brendan Morrison, hockey: Morrison helped lead U-M to an NCAA championship in 1996, and last season won the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top player.

■ Remy Hamilton, football: Hamilton, a place-kicker, has the most field goals in Michigan football history. He is aTour-year Academic All-Big Ten selection.

■ Anne Kampfe, swimming: Kampfe is a five-time Big Ten champion who placed fourth in the 400 individual medley at the Olympic Trials. She is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

■ Sarah Cyganiak, tennis: Cyganiak is the all-time singles victory leader at Michigan. She led U-M to its first Big Ten title in women’s tennis this year.

Wendy Westfall (golf) and Jason Botterill (hockey) won Spirit Awards, given to seniors who epitomize the enthusiasm and love of Michigan of Bob Ufer, a long-time Ann Arbor insurance agent whose unabashed broadcasting style of Wolverine football games won him wide recognition.

Bob Chappuis, a halfback who played for Coach Fritz Crisler in the late 1940s, was given the Bennie Oosterbaan award, given each year to someone who had an outstanding career at Michigan, and then in the 25 or more years since graduation has made a significant contribution to society.

The banquet, which is now run by Ufer’s children, raises money for scholarships to help top Ann Arbor public school students attend U-M, and to fund scholarships for U-M student-athletes to undertake graduate studies at the university.
