Pre-Induction Physicals Set For Graduates

Pre-induction physical examinations will be given to all college graduates and graduate students in Michigan this spring, Col. W. J. Myers, deputy state director of the Selective Service has announced.

In addition, Myers said, local draft boards will send questionnaires to all undergraduate students in the state, asking them when they expect to graduate, what their grades are, and demanding explanations for any time spent as college dropouts.

Students in the lower portions of their classes will be given the opportunity to take intelligence tests to prove their ability and improve their chances for continued draft deferments, Myers said in an interview with the Michigan Daily, student newspaper at the University.

Myers said the April callup will likely be lower than the March quota of 3,200. But he warned that heavy callups will continue for some time even if a truce is negotiated in Viet Nam. He said the Korean conflict ended in 1953 but heavy callups continued well into 1955 Myers said students in certain “protected” fields of study will not have to take the physical examinations.
