If strength lies in numbers, both Ann Arbor and St. Thomas High schools should have powerful football teams this season.
Over 60 candidates answered Coach Louis H. Hollway's call at Wines Field yesterday afternoon while close to 40 were on hand at Island park for the first St. Thomas drill.
Both Hollway and Father John M. Lynch expect their squads to be enlarged considerably before next week. Five lettermen - Sam Neustadt, Gus Christ, Sam Wight, Pete Gochis and Jack Brown - were missing at the Ann Arbor practice. Frank De Fillippi was the only absentee from the Irish drill.
Except for tomorrow when he will be detained by a teachers meeting, Coach Hollway plans to drill his boys twice daily the remainder of the week. Only one session - an afternoon one - is on the Pioneer schedule tomorrow.
Father Lynch will send his squad through its paces once a day starting at 1:30.
Yesterday's practice period at both camps was confined to calisthenics and other mild exercises. The heavy work will not start until next week.
