It was a long time in coming, but World War I veteran John A. Mullin received his Purple Heart medal last night with all due pomp and ceremony. The presentation was made at the Army Reserve Training Center at 1980 S. Industrial Highway by Lt. Col. John W. Dicks of Saline, commander of the 406th Maintenance Batallion, reserve unit stationed in Ann Arbor. Mullin, 76, now lives near Jackson. He formerly lived in Washtenaw County for about 30 years, including residency in Ann Arbor. He suffered a neck wound from small arms on Oct. 14, 1918, while serving in France with a machine gun company. Oversights, however, resulted in his not receiving the Purple Heart. The Washtenaw County Veterans Affairs Office, in recently helping Mullin process a pension claim, discovered he was entitled to the Purple Heart and helped him obtain it. (News photo by Cecil Lockard)
