University Team Successfully Fires Pair Of Rockets

Two rocket firings by a University aeronautical engineering team at Ft. Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, were successful, it was reported yesterday by Leslie M. Jones, research engineer of the Engineering Research Institute.

The missiles were aerobee rockets carrying instruments for measuring temperature and wind, Jones said. They are the first in a large number of rockets to be fired by the U-M in connection with the International Geophysical Year.

The aerobees, fired Saturday and Tuesday, reached heights of 58 and 56 miles, respectively, and at approximately that height recorded weather information for research.

The U-M is co-operating with the U. S. Army Signal Corps in the research.
