Age 71, passed away Friday, December 26, 2003 in Traverse City with his beloved family at his side. Richard was preceded in death by his dear wife Ann and is survived by his children and grandchildren: Stephen, his wife Deanna and their children Christopher and Julianna; Martha Videan, her husband Rick and their children Ben and Eric; Patricia Kennedy; Timothy, his wife Terry and their children Meaghan and Brendan; Peggy Sheagren and her husband Erik. His brothers and sisters Robert (Joanne), Elizabeth Smith (Max), Dolores Walsh (Jack), Ronald (Rebecca) and Mary Anne Lyberg (Matthew) and several nieces and nephews also survive him. Richard was born on September 11, 1932 in Detroit and was raised in Howell, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1954 and went on to a 38-year career at Michigan before retiring as Vice President of Government Relations and Secretary to the University. Richard was the longest serving executive in the history of the University and his signature has appeared on over 227,000 diplomas. Richard was a member of St. Thomas parish in Ann Arbor. He volunteered his time to numerous community-service and church organizations. Richard moved to Traverse City in 2002 and enjoyed the Grand Traverse Bay, sunsets and time with his family. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish in Traverse City. Contributions can be mailed to St. Thomas -Heritage Fund in Ann Arbor and to the American Cancer Society. A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas Church in Ann Arbor at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31. The family will receive friends at Muehlig Chapel this evening from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m.
