Description

Artist Cathy Jacobs presents ten oil and mixed media paintings that focus on the atmospheric qualities of landscape.

The idea for these paintings came from a newspaper photo of a forest fire in the Andes Mountains of Chile. Cathy was drawn by the beauty of the billowing clouds of smoke encroaching upon a quiet row of houses. The picture seemed to be a metaphor for how fragile her calm, personal world is in the chaotic world that is happening around her.

Although the resulting paintings could be called landscapes, they are much more about the air and atmosphere that hovers over the land: clouds, smoke, steam, and rain.

Cathy’s personal art practice has evolved from painting 2-dimensional canvases to weaving 3-dimensional pieces with linen. The paintings in this exhibition are illusionistic and expressive interpretations of atmosphere. She continues to search for atmospheric and ethereal qualities in all of her work. Examples of her paintings and woven artworks can be found at www.cathyjacobs.com.

Cathy Jacobs studied painting at Wayne State University in Detroit, and has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. She has exhibited her artwork in the United States and Canada, most notably at SOFA Expo in Chicago, ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, and the Architectural Digest Design Show in New York City. Her woven artwork is represented at Next Step Studio and Gallery in Ferndale, Michigan and the State of the Arts Gallery in Sarasota, Florida. Her art studio is at Ypsi Alloy Studios in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
