Aliens Told Report Addresses By Jan. 31

All aliens in Washtenaw County must file an alien address report form before Jan. 31 at any local post office or at the Detroit office of the U.S. Immigration Service, Walter A. Sahli, district director, said today.

The service expects that 125,000 persons throughout Michigan will register this year.

All non-citizens, except those in diplomatic status, foreign representatives of certain international organizations and those admitted temporarily as agricultural laborers, are required to file the address report.

Aliens who are not in the United States during January must report their addresses to the service within 10 days after their return.

The parent or legal guardian of an alien child under 14 years old must fill out the report form for the child. Any non-citizen who is ill may have a friend obtain the card for him and return it to the post office after it has been completed by the alien.

An alien who willfully violates the address report requirement may be fined up to $200, imprisoned for 30 days and deported.

Sahli said that the annual report program usually causes a sharp rise in the number of applications for naturalization. Aliens who desire information concerning naturalization should obtain their address report forms at the office of the Immigration and Naturalization Service where trained personnel will be available to answer inquiries, Sahli said.
