'Primitive’ Camping Put Into Girl Scout Program

The 1954 Girl Scout day camp, for which reservations are due by Sunday, will feature "primitive” camping and more cook-outs this year, as well as the usual daytime camp and craft activities and swimming.

The day camp will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 22, 24, 29, July 1, 6, 8, 13 and 15, with swimming on Wednesdays during that period. About 150 girls are expected.

The primitive camping will involve pitching tents, lashing and cooking outdoors. It will be limited to girls with at least one year as Intermediate Scouts.

To Stay Overnight

Also planned is an overnight camp in which girls with at least one year of Intermediate Scouting can stay overnight at the lodge.

Day campers will take their lunches on Tuesdays and have cook-outs on Thursdays, with milk furnished each day.

Registration fees will be $3 per girl for the eight-day session. Bus transportation will be provided for those who need it for $1.50. The overnight stay will cost $1 extra. Swimming will be open to all girls registered for day camp.

Officials Named

Mrs. Casper Grammatico is day camp chairman. Miss Ferne Brown, executive director, will direct the camp, with Mrs. Dean Wheeler and Mrs. Walter M. Kranich as business managers. Miss Zella Willis will be camp nurse.

For each eight girls from a particular neighborhood, an adult teacher is needed to serve as a counselor. Some junior and senior high Scouts will be program aides.

The aides will take a first aid course at a junior-senior weekend camp in Jackson May 22 and also will attend the first adult leader day camp training meeting May 19. Adult leaders will attend four training meetings.

Leaders signed up so far are Mrs. William Sturgis, Mrs. Dean Coston, Mrs. Ronald Christie and Mrs. Grammatico.
