Camp Hilltop A Real Community Project

ON SUNDAY, an almost ideal "community” project made its formal bow to the city whose willing hands and purses made it possible. On that day, the Ann Arbor Girl Scout Council introduced its brand-new Camp Hilltop site and lodge to the public.

Behind the figurative ribbon that was cut Sunday during the camp’s debut ceremonies, are hundreds of personal sacrifices and acts of generosity. Once the need was clearly defined for an outdoor site to provide local scouts with the invaluable lore of "roughing it,” offers of assistance came from all directions.

One man donated the entire seven-acre area on which the camp was established. This is on a spot that is particularly convenient to Ann Arbor, being on the bluff above the south bank of the Huron river just west of US-23.

A professional architect contributed a blueprint for the lodge itself. Other individuals and concerns made equally valuable grants. Apprentices in the local building unions donated their time and services to erect the camp after the scouts’ fathers, working Sundays and during off hours, cleared the site.

AND the scouts helped themselves with money-raising cookie sales and other campaigns. Sunday the whole beautiful plan, the fruit of three years’ planning and cooperation, came to a successful conclusion.

Ann Arbor may well be as proud of its part in the completion of a needed facility as are the Girl Scouts to whose future use the project is dedicated.
