Barton Boat Club Plans Regattas

Home-and-home regattas with the Orchard Lake Boat Club are planned for this summer by the Barton Boat Club, whose activities center on Barton Pond.

The Barton club will travel to Orchard Lake on Saturday, June 24, and will entertain the same club here on Aug. 12.

In a regatta held Memorial Day, the Barton club lost to the University of Michigan Sailing Club.

This is the third season for the Barton group, currently headed by "Commodore" O. W. Blackett. A rustic boathouse and a boat dock have been erected by the Detroit Edison Co. on the north shore of Barton Pond and are rented to the club for its use.

Membership has grown to 28, about 60 per cent of whom are residents of Barton Hills and the rest non-residents. The size of the club is limited because of the size of the pond and facilities available. The group has a fleet of 14 catboats.

Races over the courses laid out on Barton Pond are held every Sunday morning, with the season’s results determining the club champion. Milton M. Underdown and Prof. Robert C. Angell shared the title last year.

Starting next week a series of races for children under 16 who are members of club families is planned.
