Harry W. Nichols, 81, a retired businessman and the founder of the Zal Gaz Grotto in Ann Arbor, died Sunday in Highland Park, Ill., after a six-week illness. He lived at 420 Packard St.
Mr. Nichols founded the Zal Gaz Grotto No. 34 here in 1912 and served as its first Monarch. He helped to start other Grotto clubs throughout Michigan and Ohio.
Mr. Nichols also was a past-master and organist of the Golden Rule Lodge No. 159, F&AM, and a past-president of the Ann Arbor Kiwanis Club.
He operated a store on Catherine St. for a number of years and later managed the Moe Sport Shop at 902 S. State St.
Mr. Nichols was born March 5, 1875 in Bloomington, Ill., the son of Henry A. and Flora Robinson Nichols. He moved to Ann Arbor from Chicago in 1892.
On Nov. 21, 1900, he was married to Flora Koch of Ann Arbor. She died April 25, 1951. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1950. Mr. Nichols belonged to the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Henry Andresen of Brooklyn, N. Y., and Mrs. Raymond S. Owen of Highland Park, Ill.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Congregational Church, the Rev. William A. Young of the Highland Park Presbyterian Church officiating in the absence of the Rev. Leonard A. Parr.
