Supervisors Interested In Property Ghost Enthuses Visitors

A visit to the now vacant Holy Ghost Seminary at 4133 Washtenaw yesterday produced strong interest among Washtenaw County supervisors to buy the property.

The board’s Property Committee chairman David R. Byrd, said today that his committee will look over blueprints of the four buildings which are situated on 34 acres of land when it meets tomorrow.

Byrd and others among the nine supervisors who viewed the buildings yesterday expressed enthusiasm over the easy convertibility of the units for county offices. They also like the location, just off US-23, for those departments which have employees traveling to other parts of the county to give direct service.

The additional land could either be sold or used for expansion and could even provide the site for the new jail which the county expects to be ordered to build soon.

The purchase price has been mentioned at $1.5 million, with estimates that the facility could not be duplicated for less than $4.5 million.

The board’s committee has made contact with the attorney for the owner and has asked the county planning staff to look at the property for a preliminary report tomorrow.

The property has been vacant since June 1, after being used as a junior seminary since 1950. It was closed because of enrollment declines and the remaining 27 students were transferred to another seminary of the order in Pennsylvania.
