David opening a second bookstore

The familiar face of David Kozubei will soon be seen around the State Street business district on a much more frequent basis. David’s Books is making a comeback.

David (no one really knows him by his last name) will be opening a second bookstore above Discount Records on the corner of Liberty and State streets shortly after Thanksgiving. His present store, sort of a joint venture with Saguaro Plants on Ashley Street, will remain open.

David says the new store, also called David’s Books, will feature both new and used books in a “more comfortable” atmosphere than his used book shop on Ashley.

He also will introduce a new venture called Mission Impossible, but he admits the name is the most intriguing part. The Englishman says Mission Impossible could be subtitled “friendly advice from David.”

“If not profitable, I hope it will at least be entertaining,” he says.

David has been selling books in Ann Arbor for many years. He was an employee at Borders Book Shop before venturing out on his own in 1973. He moved a couple times before settling in on Liberty Street where he continued to expand his book business. But a cash flow problem was David’s downfall and he closed up shop in the spring of 1976.

This time, David says his finances are in good shape and he has learned his lesson about expanding. He says he still has grandiose plans for his book business, but he will take things one step at a time.
