Privacy Workshop: Slaying the Facebook Vampire
Saturday June 9, 2018: 3:00pm to 5:00pm
Downtown Library: Secret Lab
Facebook has become the de-facto social network in most people's lives, but at what cost? Behind the baby pictures and happenings of faraway friends lies a behemoth corporation, hungry for data and profit.
Facebook and other social media businesses build centralized databases of personal information to exploit and profit from. The world has already seen how these stores of data can make citizens vulnerable by enabling effective psychological warfare campaigns in governmental elections. But is there a better way? Can we socialize online and keep our privacy?
The workshop will begin with a short lecture describing the technology of centralized social media platforms and how it interacts harmfully with society, with some suggestions for improvement and responsible use. Following this, participants can engage in a hands-on workshop lead by volunteer trainers and learn the necessary skills to better maintain their privacy online.
This event is open to people of any technical ability and instruction is provided by members of CryptoParty Ann Arbor.
