While You're Waiting to Read The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

by Sara W

The ImmortalistsChloe Benjamin's The Immortalists is the story of siblings in 1969 who learn the eventual dates of their deaths from a traveling psychic and spend the rest of their lives attempting to balance destiny with independent choice. It's epic yet approachable, realistic yet fantastical, and celebrates the things that tie us together, whether it be knowledge of your impending death, family, or fate.

It also has a wait list a mile long... so here's a couple of titles to tide over your appetite for destiny drama while you wait.

A Reunion of Ghosts by Judith Claire Mitchell

Three aging sisters ready themselves follow the family tradition begun by their grandfather - and commit suicide. Ok, so the theme is super-dark, but it's balanced surprisingly well with a humorous tone and plenty of commentary from the bantering sisters.

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

A child is born again and again into the same life, eventually comprehending the weight of their choices while grappling with the causes/effects/responsibilities of living a life with a reboot option. I was knocked sideways by this vast, strange, addictive, thoughtful, visceral, funny, tragic, and utterly consuming story.
