Mary's Lenten Roses: Mrs. Mary Dwyer won't give up her Lenten Roses for Lent. She has kept them for 10 years in her front yard at 415 N. Thayer St. and her first-in-the-spring bloom stops many persons as they walk by her house. Though it usually flowers at the beginning of Lent, Mrs. Dwyer first noticed the blossoms nearly two weeks ago. "If there had been snow, it would have blossomed, too," said Mrs. Dwyer. She describes the rose (Helleborus Orientalis Atrorubens) as "difficult to get established," and not too common. (News photo by Eck Stanger)
