Description

Four dancers doing traditional Indian dances. As part of the Rasa Festival, Akshara will present a lecture-demonstration concert of Sarod, an ancient stringed instrument from India.

The sarod is a stringed instrument, used mainly in Hindustani music. Along with the sitar, it is among the most popular and prominent instruments. The sarod is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound, in contrast with the sweet, overtone-rich texture of the sitar, with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality.

The artist, Diptavo Dutta, is a PhD student in Biostatistics at the University of Michigan. He has been playing Sarod since he was 11 years old. His first guru was Shree Jayanta Raychaudhury, a disciple of Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitreya. Thereafter, he has learnt with Pt. Joydeep Ghosh of the Shahjahanpur Gharana.

This event will begin with a dance. For his lecture/demonstration Diptavo will play three short compositions of 10-12 minutes, along with explanations. This will be followed by a Q&A.
