It's That Time Again

33,000 Pastries Ready For Festival

For the past few weeks, the women of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church have been preparing those Greek pastries Ann Arborites have come to associate with the church’s annual Greek Festival and Bake Sale.

And local residents will be able to procure the goodies, as well as a variety of other Greek foods, this weekend. "Ya'ssoo Ann Arbor, 1973" will be held Friday and Saturday at St. Nicholas Church, 414 N. Main (We’re told that “Ya’ssoo” is a form of greeting in Greece.)

Pastries will be on sale from 9 a.m. to midnight both days. Among the offerings will be Baklava (diamond delights), Koulourakia (sugar butter cookies), Teropetakia (cheese triangles), Tsourekia (sweet bread) and Karithopeta (walnut cake).

Free coffee will be served in the outdoor area. About 33,000 pastries will have been made for the sale, and the telephone and mail orders for delivery of pastries in the Ann Arbor area also will be taken.

Orders may be placed up to 12 noon Saturday by calling 769-2945. A minimum order of $5 is required.

Luncheons and dinners will be served continuously from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. during the festival.

The food preparation and service is being handled by the men of the church, under the chairmanship of Nick Michos and Mike Koutsogiannis. Food service will be in the outdoor canopied “plaka.”

Greek folk and modern dance demonstrations will be presented by young people in national ethnic dress on Saturday afternoon.

On both Friday and Saturday evenings, a Greek Bouzouki Band will play outdoors, beginning at 8 p.m. Dancing will be to the music of “The Rhodians." An admission fee of $1.25 will be charged in the evenings.

General chairman of this year’s festival is Theodore Chapekis.

Other chairman include Helen Garris, publicity; Mrs. James Carras and Jack J. Garris, public relations; Bertha Chapekis and Urania Mallis, bake sales; Angelo Theros, admissions; Fotis Litsas and Nick Stamos, artifacts; Peter Stamos, benefit drawing; and Nick and Helen Stamos, entertainment.

Also chairing committees are Peter Kussurelis, finance; Louis Chiatalas, maintenance; Peter Roopas and Ronald Van Aemum, refreshments; Angelo Mallis, restaurant; Jim Douglas Jr., security; Nick Kokkales, set-up; and John Kokales, solicitations.

Proceeds from the event will go to the church’s building fund.

Old Hat?

Preparing shish kebobs will be old hat by the time Nick Michos, Ted Chapekis and Mike Koutsogiannis, left to right above, finish making and serving them to an estimated 10,000 Greek Festival goers. (Photo by Cecil Lockard)
