Involuntary Slaveholders
At the meeting of the Evangélica] Alliance in New York. Chief Justice Hornblower, now President of the Alliance, said on this point, - "He could not believe that there were any slaveholder i'rom humanity or necesssty. He could not ndmit the distinction between those who held slaves from love of gain and those who held il em frotn motivesof benevolence. Heshould assoon think ofdisitnguishing between commitling other crimes from motives of benevolence and selfishness. No man could bo compelled to hold slaves against his wil). The law might cornpel n man to maintain slaves, but could not cornpel him to cxercise acts of ownership over thetn."
