Smoke ‘Bomb’ Routs Students

An estimated 600 students of St. Thomas Elementary School wound up their year with a bang at noon today.

About 450 youngsters were in the building and the rest were out on the playground when a small smoke cartridge was ignited on the second floor of the high school building. The high school had been emptied a short time before at the conclusion of the annual Honors Convocation.

The students filed out of the school within minutes as five fire trucks arrived at the scene.

Most were back in their classroom at 12:15 p.m., to complete the year’s final day.

The person who ignited the cartridge was being sought.
