Junior-Senior Hi-Notes: 

13 Get Awards At St. Thomas Program

Thirteen students at St.Thomas High School received awards Monday night at an honors convocation as part of the student council meeting. Those honored included Kathy Lirette, Chris Bertoni, Tom McGuire, Tom Dyer, Tom Treves, Kathy Downer, Jim Siantz, Dennis McDonald, Tom Donnelly, Mary Wiedenbeck, Mark Bertoni, Anne Uren and Dee Ann Dickinson.

Mary Sharon Boudeman is president of next year’s Future Nurses Club. Other officers are Kathy Kinney, vice-president, and Linda Langstaff, secretary-treasurer.

The press club party was held yesterday after school. Co-editors for next year were appointed.

The Junior-senior banquet was held last night in the Michigan League. Guest speaker was Dennis Kosmolski.

The home economics class gave a buffet luncheon for its senior members Monday.

Yesterday afternoon the speech class presented a play, “If Men Played Cards As Women Do.”

The athletic awards will be presented Monday in the school auditorium. The fourth quarter ended yesterday and a few finals were given.

Ann Arbor High 

Ann Arbor High School’s hostess committee, which is composed of girls selected for their leadership ability, scholastic average, and appearance, elected new officers and announced new junior and sophomore members. New officers are Mary Newton, president, Barbara Crippen, vice-president, and Pat Goldsmith, secretary. The committee’s duties include serving at luncheons and dinners, guiding visitors through the building and sponsoring an after-school dance,

Kenneth Greer, high school comptroller, has announced that all bills resulting from the carnival must be in his office by the end of this week if a person wishes to be reimbursed.

Last week Mrs. Lulu Kyprie, school nurse, had students answer a questionnaire concerning hearing. This was part of hearing tests administered to students last month.

Last Monday sophomore and junior homerooms nominated candidates for student council representatives for next year. One representative from each homeroom will be selected tomorrow.

All senior athletes were honored at a sports banquet last night in the high school’s cafeteria. The hostess committee served.

The Future Teachers’ Club under the sponsorship of Mrs. Adelaide Karsian elected new officers at their last meeting. Next year’s officers are Brenda Roseman, president; Cindy Straight, vice-president; Mary Weller, secretary and Kay Price, treasurer. Yesterday the club held its twice-postponed picnic.

Members of the senior class are preparing for examinations which will be given next week. The last day of school for seniors is June 6.

The housing committee for the National Student Council Convention slated for Ann Arbor High June 24-27 still needs homes for boys rather than girls. About 80 per cent of the delegates to the convention will be boys.

The high school library will close to general use tomorrow. All books must be turned in.

The refreshment committee for the senior prom needs people to bake cookies. Anyone interested in doing so should contact a member of the committee or a senior executive board member.

Several hundred students will go by bus to Stratford, Ont. Aug. 30 where they will attend the Shakespearean Festival. They will see two plays, “Comedy of Errors” and “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

Students interested in attending should contact Betsy Kirchen or their English teacher.

Forsythe Junior High

Last Thursday the biology classes at Forsythe Junior High School left on their annual canoe trip down the Manistee River. Loaded on a bus, the classes rode to Grayling where they spent the night at a motel. Friday they canoed down the Manistee and arrived home at 10 p.m. Among those who accompanied the students on the trip were Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Gelhbach, Arthur H.Snyder, Lloyd E. Kooyers, Ronald Stangl, Mrs. Catherine C. Tank and Dr. Robert Hendrix.

Last week Ann Arbor High’s Girls League sent representatives to talk with the ninth-grade girls about their future at Ann Arbor High. Girls League consists of many clubs such as the Future Nurses Club, Future Teachers Club and the Girls’ Athletic Association.

After school softball intra-murals have ended and the winning team is Team Five.

Ninth graders will attend their last dance at Forsythe tomorrow night in the cafe-torium.

Ralph Duckwall from the University’s speech department gave a demonstration on the application of stage makeup to the 26-member cast of the speech and drama class’ play, “Once Upon A Time.” The play was presented yesterday morning.

University High

Tomorrow is university High School’s annual Purple and Gold Meet. Each student in grades 7 through 10 is a member of one of the teams, which compete in track and field events all afternoon. At the end of the day, all the points are totaled.

Since only morning classes will be held, it will be a Bermuda shorts day and team colors will be worn. The 11th graders officiate at the meet and the seniors will take the day off for a class picnic.

All boys who earned athletic awards this year were invited to a sports banquet Tuesday.

The dinner was held at the Ann Arbor Women’s City Club.

The Girls’ Athletic Association is electing its officers this week. Petitions were distributed on Monday, and elections will be held in the homerooms on Wednesday.

The junior class is having a class picnic today at Kensington Park.

U High will present a spring music concert at 8 p.m. tomorrow in Schorling Auditorium. The concert is open to the public. The orchestra under the direction of Charles Keen and the choir directed by James Berg will perform. Sylvia Berg will be piano soloist.

On June 7 the Latin Club will have its annual banquet at Paul Woosley’s house. New members will be initiated.

Slauson Junior High

Slauson Junior High School’s ninth-grade party will be held from 7:30 to 10 p.m. tomorrow at the school. Admission is a student council ticket.

On Tuesday Mrs. Mary Lou Chaffee, special consultant at Ann Arbor High, and girls from the high school’s Girls’ League talked to ninth grade girls in a special assembly.

Candidates for the student council offices are Andy Bateman and Tom Wall for president; Marck Carrow for vice-president; Linda LeVan, Margaret Fairman and Sharon Mayfield for secretary, and Kay Sauer, Linda Hammon and Kris Hanselman for treasurer.

Campaign speeches will be made tomorrow. The primary elections will be held June 3 and the finals on June 5.

Work has begun on the last edition of the Slauson “Echo.” Slauson’s yearbook, “Exodus” has been on sale this week.

The eighth-grade history club are planning a picnic for the last week of school.

Slauson students participated in the city junior high track meet yesterday.

Slauson reporters are Sharon Beemer, Kay Sauer and Keith Peden.

Tappan Junior High 

Tomorrow the ninth graders at Tappan Junior High School will have their graduation party. The theme of the party is “Say-onara,” Japanese word meaning goodbye. Chairmen are Pat McAllister, decorations; Annie Wellman, intermission show; DJ Mitchell, refreshments; Tara English, chaperones, and Katie Doerr, entertainment.

Next Wednesday Tappan’s orchestra will play for the students. They will give a second performance in the evening.

Two teams in both the first and second league of Tappan’s golf program have tied for first place. In league No. 1 the teams are Jim Clark and Dave Smith and Al Campbell and Phil Heller. In the second league the teams are Gary Mortenson and Dave Portman and Howie Aishe and Bob Smith.
