Prof. Leo Fairbanks, Local Man’s Brother, Succumbs In Oregon

Prof. J. Leo Fairbanks, chairman of the department of art and architecture at Oregon State College, Corvallis. Ore., and brother of Prof. Avard Fairbanks, sculptor on the University of Michigan campus, died of a heart attack Thursday morning.

Well-known in art circles throughout the country, Prof. Fairbanks’ works may be found in Hawaii, Arizona, California, Utah, and states of the Northwest.

He studied at the Julian Academy in Paris and was admitted to the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts. At the close of his studies there he won highest honors in painting and sculpture. He further studied at the University of Chicago and Columbia University.

Upon his return to the West, Prof. Fairbanks was appointed supervisor of art in the public schools at Salt Lake City where he created and organized Salt Lake City’s City Planning Commission.

Prof. Fairbanks had held his position at Oregon State College since 1923. In the library of the Oregon State College are two large mural decorations executed by Prof. Fairbanks. He also did mural and stained glass studies for the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago.

Prof. Fairbanks spent a part of one summer in Ann Arbor when he came to work with his brother, Avard, in completing the monument erected in Omaha, Nebr., entitled “Winter Quarters.” This group of panels in bronze were placed at the location where three of his grandparents were buried in 1846.

Avard Fairbanks left today to attend the funeral services which will be held Monday afternoon in Salt Lake City. He will then go to Corvallis, Ore., before returning to Ann Arbor.
