Description
According to the National Endowment of the Arts, the purpose of the Becoming American series is to "get people thinking about the social and historical impact that immigration has had over time and how that relates to the national debate currently taking place in the U.S. and around the world." In support of this mission, the Ann Arbor District Library is proud to offer writing workshops geared toward those for whom immigration is a part of their life story. Participants need not be writers, only willing to tell their stories.
This workshop is for those ages 12-18. The workshop will be led by Rebecca Fortes, a first-generation Latinx writer who received her MFA in fiction from the Helen Zell Writers' Program at the University of Michigan. Participants can expect to read samples of texts from people like themselves and produce short pieces of prose that explore their own relationship to immigration. There will be opportunities to perform their work, but no formal opportunity to receive feedback on their work.
This event is a part of the Ann Arbor District Library's programming with the Becoming American Documentary & Film Discussion series. For more information about the Becoming American Documentary Film & Discussion Series and other related programming, visit aadl.org/becomingamerican.
