Il wil! be seen by ihe officia] cali tlmt llie time and place of bolding the National Con ventiorr have at last been settlcd by seven of the twelve members of the Conimillee. One of the twelve, Mr. Stevens, baving deeeased, Mlchignn, it appear?, lost its vote in tlie Commitiee : two other members of the Commiitoe did not an swer : and two were decidcdly in favo of postponement lo spring : lenving only seven in favor of calling the conventioi tliis fait. An eariierday in October w think would have been more convenien for the West. Hut tliat is immaterial We presume a large delogation from tli West wil] be present. As the portion of the Liberty party in favor of an enrly nominotion have man ifesled so much tenacity upon thaf poinf perheps it is best tliat they should Imv their wishes gratified, although sanction ed by only a bare majority of the Nation al Commitleo. It appears inevitable however, thal the Liberty strengt h in th canvass of 1848 will be divided upon a least two antislavery candiifates. Th nominntion of the Macedón convention and the acceptance of Mr. Smith, ha rendered such a result unavoidablo, un less the Liberty party, at the Ltuffal meeting, will also nomínate M-ossrs. Smit and Burritt. This would-, indeed, unit the votes ofall Liberty men on the sam candidates : but t wonld at once commi the Liberty party to ihe 19 principies o ;he new party, and as mny more as they may agree upon hereafter, Tkis th Liberty pa- will not do. The proposiiion for such a change ir the policy of the Libeity party, as proposdd inour circular two years since, md witli such a general cor.d;innnton, thttt it cannot be possible but the great mnjority will ndhere to the determinaron then expressed. At the same time, some thouands of the mos! devoted Liberty men will support Mr. Smith, thereby diminishing the vote of the Liberty party candidates. The alienation of fecling between old fellow laborers, and the perpetual wranglings, disputes, charges and recrivninations tha: will grow out of a hoslile canvass belvveen opposingsections of the Liberty party, render this oivision, ío us, a matter of regret. We notice by the papers that the civil war has already begun in Gerrit Smith'a immediate neighborhood, several meetings having been held in which the adherents of the Liberty " League" and Liberty "Party" were about oqual in numbers.
