Dental School Addition’s Dedication Is Set Back
Occupancy or the University’s new $470,000 dental school addition is expected to be possible by Feb. 1, but dedication ceremonies, originally planned for Jan. 10. have been deferred until April 3, it was announced today.
The building was constructed without cost to the University, since the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek provided 55 per cent of the funds and the Public Works Administration the remainder.
Unique In Field
Unique in that it is the first building ever erected solely for post-graduate and graduate work in dentistry, the new addition will enable the School of Dentistry to expand greatly its teaching and research in these fields and in children’s dentistry. It will be known as the W. K. Kellogg Foundation School of Children’s Dentistry, Graduate and Post-Graduate Study.
On the main floor of the three-story structure are administrative offices, and facilities for children’s dentistry, orthodontics, seminar rooms and caries research. The first, or grade level floor has research laboratories, histology and pathology laboratories, seminar rooms, an auditorium which will seat 400, and lockers and lounges for post-graduate students and faculty members. The third floor is to be devoted to oral surgery, prosthetic (plate work) dentistry, partial denture prothesis, root surgery, operative dentistry and ceramics (porcelain work).
The most modern equipment available has been installed for the teaching and research activities in the unit, which will be administered by the University as a separate division of the School of Dentistry.
1,000 Will Come Here
About 1,000 persons are expected to come here for the dedication ceremonies, to be held in conjunction with a reunion of University dental school alumni.
Formal dedication of the building by a W. K. Kellogg Foundation representative will be made in the morning of April 3 in the Rackham Building lecture hall. An outstanding speaker is to be obtained for the talk on dentistry which will follow the dedication, and the group then will adjourn to the Michigan Union for lunch.
A monument to Dr. Willoughby D. Miller, University alumnus and noted dental scientist, will be unveiled and the new building inspected in the afternoon.
