E. N. Bertoni Dies At Hospital

 

Eugene N. Bertoni, 52, of 1425 Pontiac, local civic worker, lifelong resident of Ann Arbor and an employe of the Michigan Bell Teelphone Co. for the past 32 years, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital following an illness of two weeks.

Mr. Bertoni, a graduate of St. Thomas High School, was a volunteer worker with the Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County since its founding.

He headed the renovation work for the agency’s building at 117 N. Division, recruiting carpenters and other craftsmen. Since then he had helped the agency with aiding families with problems by obtaining food, clothing, furniture and providing other services.

Mr. Bertoni had served as a judge at the annual Southeastern Michigan Science Fair for a number of years, and was one of the foremost supporters of the fair. He was a member of the Ann Arbor Exchange Club, one of the fair’s sponsors, and had been active in other civic activities of the club.

He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and St. Thomas Catholic Church.

He was born on April 20, 1917, in Ann Arbor, a son of Ralph and Marguerita Rovengo Bertoni. He and Rosemary Kromer were married on Aug. 23, 1939. She survives.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Nicholas of Ann Arbor, Mark of Rochester, N.Y., and Matthew with the Sea Bees in Okinawa; two daughters, Christina in the Peace Corps in Batswana, Africa, and Camilla . at home; three sisters, Mrs. J. D. (Toni) Royce and Mrs. William (Margurite) Oliver, both of Ann Arbor, and Mrs. John (Nancy) Lager of Madison, Wis.; two brothers, Andrew of Northville and Richard of Ann Arbor, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church. A scripture service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Muehlig Chapel where friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 Thursday.
