■On Friday last. the Coroner held an inrjuest at the house of Judge Dunica, a few miles south of the cily, over the body of a negro girl, eight years of age, belonging to Mr. Cordell. The body exhibited evidence of ihe most cruel whifping and beating we have ever lieard of. The flesh on the b: ck and limbs was benten to a jelly- one shoulJer bone was laid bnre- there were several cuts, apparently from a club, on the licad -and around the nock was ihe ir.dentalionofacord, by whicli t was supposed f-he had been confined lo a tree. She had been hired by a man by the name of Tanner, residiog in the neighborhood, and was sent home in this condition.- Afier coming home, her constant request, uniil herdealh, was for bread, by which it would seem tliat she had been starved as well as uninercifully whipped. The jury returned a verdict that she carne to lier doitli by blows inflicted by som e person unknown, whilst she was in the employ of Mr. Tanner. The subject, we presume, will undergo a judicial investigation, and we hope the heartless person who could ialict such crueliy on one of so tender jcirs will receive the puuishment due their crime.- St. Ctmê Republican. The opponents of Capital Punishment liave, it is said, gainpd Inrgely in the recent rorliumentory elections in Eng'and.
