Qj" Gen. Macomb, n 1838, thus described the residence and ajipearanco of Silas Wriglil : "I had occasion to visit Cnnton, in Octobe.", and as soon as J arrived I nquirea fiar ihe residente nf Mr. VVright. I waa directed to a sin-ill, neot cottage, whitl.er I made my wny ; and on nppioacliing it, I saw a man, with his coat oíF, wheeling a vvliOfl-barrDw along one of the walks of a very large girden lliat was attached to the house. As I cime near I discovered that the laborer was rriy friend VVright. [le rcceived me with great cordiality ; sai I that his gi rden was cultivated mairily by his orn liinds. and he was putting away his winter st ck of egetables and preparing to deport for Washington towards the Inst of the com:ng month. He fjrther said, with tha grentest apparent satisfnct on, thal he liad recemly [in 1837] purchased a farm, and intended 10 extend his ngrictíllufal operalions. He was asked how la ríe the farm was that he had i ■urchnspH, o which he answered - 20 rcivs ! He siid tbnl eitlier from natural inclination or e;uly habils he was much rievoted to the pure and simple pursuits of tlie country."
