Police Hire Four Officers, One Woman

Mrs. Jewel Reynolds To Handle Juvenile Work For Department

Ann Arbor's police force approached full strength today with the approval of employment of five persons, including four new patrolmen and the first woman to be hired by the department for police work of a non-clerical nature.

Police commission approval was given for the hiring of Mrs. Jewel Reynolds, 42-year-old Ypsilanti resident, who will work with juveniles and will perform other regular policewoman duties.

Acting Chief Casper N. Enkemann also announced that four more patrolmen will be added to the force. They are Lewis Gardner, 24 years old, 1009 Huron River Dr.; Jay Hamm, 30, Whitmore Lake; Robert Robinson, 23, 1890 Upland Dr., and Arthur Meggison, 503 Church St.

The first three are service veterans, with Gardner having served with the Marines, Hamm with the Army and Robinson with the Army Air Force.

Newcomers to the department whose homes are outside Ann Arbor will move to the city to comply with a commission ruling as soon as homes are available for them.

The new personnel brings the department staff to 44, with one more position to be filled. It was pointed out, however, that 17 members of the present staff are on their probationary periods and thus can’t be definitely listed as permanent employes until they have successfully passed that period.
