Mrs. J. Adams ihua describes the City of Washington as she found it in 1801 : "liero and there," she riles, "is a .iiall col, uithnut a glass window, íntersperscd amongst tlie forens ihrough which you trnvel for miles withom seeing n hu. man being. Tho house is upon a grand and superb scnle, req jiring sbout thirty servants to atlend nnd keep the apartments in perfect order. I could content myself inlost nnywhere for three months, but surrounded by forest, can you believ ihat wood is not to Lfl had. becaiio peopio cannot be found to cut and cart it ? Th house is made hnbit.-ible, but there is not single apartment in it finished. We have not the least fence, yard or other convenientes without, and the great un. intshed audience room I tnake n drying. room of 10 h.ing up the clothes in. It is a bfaiitiful spot, capal.le of every improvement, and the more I view it ths more I nm delighted with it." The "grent unfiniihed audience room," which Mrs. Adams speaks of, is the famousEast Rlohi of ih White House.
