Society herb show planned

The Southern Michigan Unit of The Herb Society of America will present “An Afternoon With Herbs” from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at First United Methodist Church, 1589 W. Maple Road at Pleasant in Birmingham. Speaking will be Teresa Monte Grabil, host of the TV show “An Herbal Harvest,” seen on cable and PBS stations.

A tea and herbal treat reception will follow, and books, crafts and plants will be offered for sale. Tickets are $10; for ticket information, call (313) 737-9470 or (313) 645-0895. This presentation is a yearly fund raiser for scholarships and public gardens.

The Southern Michigan Unit maintains a formal herb garden and an informal kitchen garden at the Cranbrook Gardens and a small herb garden at the Moross House in Detroit. The unit also supports a scholarship in horticulture at Michigan State University and the 4-H children’s garden being constructed at Michigan State. In addition, money is donated to the National Herb Garden at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C.

Master gardener Darragh Wei-man will present “The Gardener’s Season” from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16, at Zion Lutheran Church. Weisman will show slides and answer questions. This is the finale of “A Garden Tour,” sponsored by International Neighbors. Garden plot information will be available. For further information, call 663-6472. Hidden Lake Gardens, Tipton, will present “Beginning Herb Gardening” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 30. This program is geared toward people who have never had an herb garden. Tina Podboy Laughner will discuss basic herb gardening in the morning and, following lunch, participants will car pool to Emery’s in Adrian to purchase herb plants. Bring a sack lunch and dress for the weather. The cost is $11, $16 for two in the same family. Please call (517) 431-2060 to register.
