Saline Honors Its Goodwill Ambassador
SALINE - Meredith Bixby, who has entertained millions of people all over the nation for the past 41 years with his marionettes, was honored as Saline's “First Goodwill Ambassador" by the city council this week.
Bixby, who lives in Saline, received a plaque and letter of commendation from council citing over 30,000 performances by him to 10 million people in 5,000 different communities.
He was recognized "for his artistic contributions to the cultural and spiritual life of the community and nation.”
In other council matters this week, an ordinance was adopted permitting drive-in businesses in central business districts after special approval is given.
Authorization to sign the subdivi. sion agreement for Phase 1 (lots 1-42) for the Colony Estates Subdivision was deferred to the city engineers for information on storm sewage.
It was announced that UAW Local 892 will sponsor a breast cancer early detection program, using thermography, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday. The tests will be given at the UAW Hall, 211 Monroe St. The cost is $20. For further information and appointment, call 4294456.
A variance hearing will be held at 8 p.m. May 2 at city hall concerning three property owners whose properties will be non-conforming because of plans by the State Highway Department to widen portions of Michigan Avenue. James Levleit, director of staff, said because of the project, the three parcels won't have the required setbacks from the road. The highway department plans to widen Michigan from four to five lanes from the Ford plant to Maple Street. A left turn lane will be installed. It is also planned to widen Michigan Avenue from two lanes to four lanes from Mills Road to the bridge.
It was announced Saline will exchange mayors with Grand Blanc on Mayors Exchange Day May 16.
