The plastic walls scratch at the back of her neck as she leans over and rests her cheek on his shoulder. Years ago, this might have induced a fluttery feeling in her stomach. Now? It merely elicits the warm knowledge that he is there. His phone buzzes; his girlfriend no doubt. Once upon a time, it might have made her jealous.
When the door to the doctor’s office emerges and a clipboard emerges, her pulse quickens, then halts. The news is not dire. All is well.
He smiles. “You good?”
“Yeah. Thanks.”
Then they part ways. Friends always, love always.
