H.C. Baker, former News cashier, dies
Harold C. Baker, a founding member of the Ann Arbor Lions Club and long-time Ann Arbor News employee. died early this morning of natural causes at his home at 920 S. Seventh St. He was 85.
For 10 years Baker was the News' cashier and headed the newspaper's business
BAKER office. He came to the paper in 1921, after having worked at the Flint Journal for five years.
Baker was the first president of the Ann Arbor Lions Club, from 1929-30, and received the first 25year insignia awarded by the club. He was a charter member of both the Flint and Ann Arbor branches of the Lions Club.
HE WAS AN American Legion member, vice president of the Washtenaw County chapter of the Michigan Society of Crippled CHildren and Adults, a member of the Elks, and a former chef de gare of the 40 et 8.
Baker was a staunch fan of University of Michigan football and had seen more than 400 games, including the 1976 Rose Bowl when he was 81.
Survivors include one son, Howard W. Baker and Mrs. Robert Armbruster, both of Ann Arbor, and four grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Muehlig Funeral Chapel and were incomplete as The News went to press.
