Back Board Rescue Method Demonstrated Demonstrating the use of a back board at Buhr Park are city pool lifeguards (from left in the water) Tom Wilkins, Dave Baldwin, Waneta Boman and Tom Peck. Stephanie Mills is tied to the rescue board. According to Tom Mollet, head of the Red Cross Water Safety Program, Ann Arbor is one of the first cities in the state to use the back board method of rescue. The board is designed to immobilize victims with back or neck injuries during the rescue process and to eliminate any further injury which could occur by trying to lift the victim onto a stretcher or into an ambulance.
