Girl

He was the light in my life, the candle in the darkness, and the other half to my soul; my heart reached out to his, and I knew my whole being would belong to him forever.

Boy

Every time I saw her, she lifted my mood with her mere presence. She came with an air of gentleness that no other girl could rival, one that displayed compassion yet commanded attention from those around her.

Girl

We would meet by the second floor stairwell before school, conversing like old friends. However, I would flinch inwardly every time he mentioned the word friend, regardless of who he was talking about. He was more than a friend to me, but he couldn’t have felt the same way; every generic smile he sent my way made my heart drop a little more each time.

Boy

Every conversation, every encounter, and every glance from her caused a familiar ache in my chest, but for the sake of our friendship, I reigned in those emotions each time we met; they swirled like a hurricane inside my stomach until the two of us finally departed. The truth was always at the tip of my tongue, but alas, I felt that I had to wait.

Girl

We were sitting on the swings one day, swinging back and forth, when he suddenly stopped and stood up, staring at the stars.

Boy

The universe was such a vast place, yet I was the one lucky enough to meet this girl. My heart increasing in speed, I looked down at her. In that moment, it didn’t matter whether she felt the same way because I could not wait anymore. I knew I was handing my heart to her on a platter; if she decided at that moment to break my heart, it would take weeks, even months, to pick up the broken shards that she left behind. But I didn’t mind… after all, it was hers to shatter.

Girl

People say Disney World is the happiest place on earth, but the happiest place on earth for me was underneath the stars in the local park when he finally confessed. As we walked home that night with our hands held together, no genie or fairy godmother could have made me wish for something else.

Boy

Seasons came and went and years flew by, but one person stayed consistent: her. She was the love of my life, and I looked at her everyday, thinking to myself, how was I amongst the few that were fortunate enough to earn someone as good as her?

Girl

What seemed foreign at first quickly became the new norm: morning kisses, hugs throughout the day, and late night drives with him every night. It was blur, and before we both knew it, graduation day had come.

Boy

As I walked down the stage with my diploma, the only person in my line of sight was none other than her, waiting with her arms outstretched. There was no hesitation as I picked her up and spun her around and around, our graduation robes flying every which way.

Girl

They said that long-distance wouldn’t work. They said that it would break down our relationship as quickly as vinegar would metal. But our connection to each other was stronger than any magnet on this earth, for no matter how far apart we were, I knew I would always find my way back to him.

Boy

Home was where the heart was. For me, my heart was wherever she was. It’s been six years since high school graduation, and the two of us had moved into a quaint little apartment in the city. It gave the both of us an easier time to rekindle what had been lost during college and blossom newfound affection towards one another. I thought life couldn’t get any better until one day, by chance, I was lucky enough to meet a woman whom I knew could change my life forever.

Girl

For a while, whispers circulated the air, rumoring of a second woman by his side. Another woman? With the man I had been with since high school? There was no way.

Boy

We met every Sunday, seizing every opportunity to meet while my girlfriend attended her weekly yoga class. The two of us conversed and discussed details in hushed tones, dedicated to keeping the concepts covered under wraps.

Girl

It was quite simple to ignore at first. But as time passed, I could feel the whispers slowly penetrate my mind and eat away at my thoughts. Before long, all that was left between the rumors and my sanity was a flimsy barrier composed of my memories of us all these years.

Boy

This was it: the last meeting. She and I had decided that everything was set, and it would only be a mere 24 hours before I finally came clean to my girlfriend with what I had been up to these last few weeks.

Girl

All I could feel was the rumors that swallowed me whole as I headed toward their location, fire filling my veins and a nauseous taste dancing upon my tastebuds.

Boy

I stood up abruptly as she walked through the front door of the restaurant, eyes ablaze with hellfire. I could feel the other woman’s eyes on my back, but my attention was solely focused on the one standing in front of me. What was she doing here?

Girl

Venomous words flew out of my mouth in an eruption; I left no room for him to speak as I felt the fantasy of our collapsed relationship crumble around me. There was only red as I stormed out of that restaurant, making plans to move to the farthest city possible as soon as I could.

Boy

There was only a faint buzzing in my ear as everything moved around me in slow-motion. I fell limp into the chair I just stood up from, gaping at the sheets that laid around me: a sheet displaying different churches, potential invitation designs, and a check written out for a certain opal-encrusted diamond ring.

Girl

I sat on my friend’s bed as the profile of the same woman from the restaurant by his side popped up on my screen.
