Description

Whether it’s cheering on your home team, standing proud with your classmates, or forming a club to make your school a better place, there are many ways to be true to your school and express your school spirit. These events and activities are not only life-defining, but American school spirit is an integral part of our country’s collective history and culture.

Back in 1967, future filmmaker and American history buff Ken Burns, then a middle school student at Tappan Junior High School in Ann Arbor, may have been thinking along these lines when he wrote this essay on school spirit for the Youth Soapbox section of the Ann Arbor News.

In this exhibit, we’ve selected some of our favorite photos from among the many homecomings, Friday night lights, parades, performances, graduations, and first - as well as last! - days of school as captured by News photographers through the years.
