Professor ‘marvelous teacher’

Loraine M. Cook, a "marvelous teacher," "devoted clinician" and professor emeritus of social work at the University of Michigan, died Saturday after a long illness at her home in Florida. She was 61.
“She was just a marvelous teacher,” said Phillip A. Fellin, UM social work professor who was dean of the School of Social Work during her tenure there. "She had such a nice manner about her. She was a tremendously popular teacher. And she was very much involved with the social agencies where we place our students for field work. She kept up with the clinical side, rather than just being a researcher."
Cook joined the U-M faculty as a full professor in 1964 and was granted professor emeritus status by the Board of Regents upon her retirement in 1986. She came to the U-M from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she had been an associate professor of social work.
Cook was born Loraine Michalowski in Bay City on Dec. 8, 1926, and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the U-M and her doctorate from the University of Chicago. She served as director of social services at Kalamazoo State Hospital from 1953-58 before beginning her teaching career.
“We'll miss Loraine but not forget her," said Harold Johnson, the current dean of the School of Social Work. “She was just an outstanding teacher, one of the great teachers in this school and on campus generally, and a very devoted and competent clinician who always worked hard to promote improvements in clinical social work. She was just an outstanding leader within the school. She will be sorely missed."
She and Douglas Cook, an Ann Arbor attorney and U-M Law School graduate, were married in Ann Arbor on Jan. 26, 1949. He survives. Also surviving are a son, Arthur D. Cook, of Newport Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. John (Candice) Bass, of Walnut Creek, Calif., a grandson, Geoffery Bass; and a brother, Arthur D. Mich, of Bay City.
Upon her retirement two years ago, Cook and her husband moved to Bonita Springs, Fla.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Student Chapel on the U-M campus. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Ann Arbor. Additional memorial services will be scheduled later by the School of Social Work.
