Willow Run Reservists Being Sought
WILLOW RUN – The new Air Force Reserve jet fighter squadron based at Willow Run Airport has opened an office here and begun an intensive campaign to recruit up to 400 reservists.
The recruiting office is located in the Packard Hangar, which Air Force took over last fall. The building, on the east side of the airfield here, has become headquarters for the 472nd Fighter Squadron (Reserve), a unit of the 10th Air Force based at Selfridge Field.
Under the command of Capt. Russell E. Wells, who recently returned from a tour of duty with a jet fighter squadron in French Morocco, a detachment of regular Air Force personnel has been brought here to advise and train the reservists.
Some 40 Washtenaw county area reservists are forming the nucleus of the new squadron. They were transferred here from Selfridge. The 472nd is seeking reserve commissioned officers who are rated pilots, any former airmen and veterans of other services skilled in administrative and maintenance fields, Capt. Wells said.
When the squadron is at full strength of 400 men and officers, 25 jet fighters will be assigned here for weekend flying. Actual flying activity is expected to start early next month, Capt. Wells said.
