Bartender Grabs Gun After Patron Fires Two Shots
Police last night arrested a 62 year-old Ann Arbor man who they said fired two shots with a pistol in la crowded Ann St. tavern before a bartender wrested the gun away from him.
Officers said John G. Calhoun of 120 E. Summit St. was firing the shots at a woman companion, Katherine Russell of 122 W. Kingsley St. The shots missed her.
Calhoun and Miss Russell became embroiled in an argument at the Midway lunchroom and tavern, 111 E. Ann St., according to police.
She was walking out of a restroom when Calhoun left his place at the bar and fired a .25 caliber automatic at her, the officers said.
The shot went wide and hit the wall of the tavern.
The proprietor, Dave Keaton, then hurdled the bar and grabbed Calhoun's arm in time to deflect a second shot into the ceiling, police said. He then took the gun away from Calhoun, who left the tavern.
Miss Russell telephoned police, who picked up Calhoun just outside the building.
In a statement to officers he admitted firing the shots at her. He was jailed for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to do great bodily harm.
