Local teens picked for scholarships

Four area teenagers have been awarded scholarships for academic achievement from the local Delta Psi Omega chapter of the national Alpha Kappa Alpha, the oldest black women's sorority.

LeAnn C. Hackney, a graduate of Huron High School in Ann Arbor and the daughter of Ann Arbor School Board Trustee Larry Hackney, and Frances Howard, of Willow Run High School, were awarded $750 scholarships. Both plan to study medicine, Hackney at Princeton University and Howard starting at the Hampton Institute.

The group awarded $500 scholarships to Lily Hu, from Ann Arbor’s Pioneer High School and Yulonda Swanson, from Willow Run High School. Hu plans to study medicine at the University of Michigan and Swanson engineering at Eastern Michigan University.

The four, along with 11 other teen-agers, also received certificates last month for outstanding academic achievement and extracurricular activities at their high schools.
