’63 Open House Season Ending At Observatory

The final open house of 1963 at the Radio Astronomy Observatory at Peach Mountain, some 14 miles northwest of Ann Arbor, will be from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

The Radio Astronomy Observatory site is the location of the U-M's 85-foot parabolic or dish antenna, with which University scientists and engineers obtain and study naturally-occurring radio signals that originate deep in space.

With this 11-story high device and associated equipment they have been able to make such basic contributions to radio astronomy as measuring radio signals from the moon, Saturn, Mercury, and other celestial objects. They have also determined the orientation in space of the huge magnetic fields associated with distant galaxies.

This is the fifth open house this year.

The site may be reached by turning west off of US-23 north of Ann Arbor onto W. North Territorial Rd., and is located at 10280 W. North Territorial.
