Why is music created by accomplished Classical composers like Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780), Chevalier St. Georges (1745-1799), and Jane Mary Guest (1762-1846) not widely known and so rarely performed?

Join ÆPEX Contemporary Performance for an enthralling lecture-recital that investigates these questions through the lives, identities, and creativity of these three composers, including performances of compositions that are almost never heard in the United States.

The event will feature a discussion and Q&A led by ÆPEX's Executive Director, Dr. Garrett Schumann, which will explore sociological and pedagogical issues that have obscured the music of women composers, like Jane Mary Guest, and black composers, like Ignatius Sancho and Chevalier St. Georges, throughout Classical music's history. The accompanying recital will highlight each composer's output through chamber works for strings and keyboard, and features Detroit-based violinist Lucy Alessio alongside other local musicians.

ÆPEX Contemporary Performance is a nonprofit concert presenting organization founded in 2015 with the mission of sharing music created by rarely performed and underrepresented twentieth and twenty-first century composers from around the world with audiences across Michigan. This event is connected to The ÆPEX Anthology, a new research project coordinated by ÆPEX and a nationwide network of scholars, artists, and faculty with the goal of making Classical music created by people with marginalized identities more accessible to college music instructors and curricula.
